The Cultivating Humanity Scholarship addresses the Social Determinants of Health, which are non-medical factors that significantly impact health outcomes. In New Mexico, many families are living paycheck to paycheck. One unexpected crisis can lead to a detrimental spiral of decline and mental crisis. This scholarship quickly fills the gap (temporarily) to prevent a domino effect of decline over all domains. The scholarship is available only to clients that are actively working in one of WSI Projects. It has provided rent assistance to prevent evictions; childcare help so a single parent could start working; help with bus passes and small car repairs; and copay assistance to keep individuals active in mental health treatment.
A growing gap is accessing mental health therapy. As healthcare premiums continue to rise, so do out-of-pocket deductibles and copays. Often, as young adults move from educational training to full-time employment there is a gap in insurance. Many first responder insurance plans have the least amount of mental health coverage. There is a gap in mental health care for those careers that care for our community. We prioritize First Responders, Veterans, and their families to access mental health through this scholarship fund.
